The secret to creating this word banner is to use clear contact paper on the back of the old pages to make them a bit less fragile. Just lay the contact paper on your clean work surface with the sticky side up. Place the sheets of paper on the contact paper with the side that you'd like to appear on the front of the letters up (wrong side to the sticky side of contact paper).
Using a program like Microsoft Word, create a document with the letters you'd like to use. The font should be at about 200 points and all caps. I find that serif fonts (or fonts with feet) work best. Print out the document and cut each letter into its own square.
Place the letter over the reinforced book pages and, using the letter as a template, cut around the letter. For letters with enclosed areas, like P and B and D, gently fold the papers and cut a slit in the middle of the area to be cut out. From that area, carefully cut to the letter.
After you've cut all of the letters out, you'll want to string them together. Thread a thin needle with a lengthy bit of thread, knotted at the end. Carefully sew along the top edges of the letters, leaving a space between the letters. Be extra careful with letters like "W" and "M" and "N" when sewing between the top sections not to pull the parts so they come together. Also be sure to leave a bigger space between words.
After you sew the letters together, you can sew a ribbon to the first and last letters for easy hanging.
What will your banner say?
