Project No. 1
Make a Cake!

This is a fun little exercise to get your creativity flowing. It is meant to be a project to add to a creativity journal. Every issue of the magazine will have a quickie project like this. Just glue them into a blank journal. Before long, you'll have a whole book full of fresh inspiration!

First, grab a bunch of ribbon, paper and lace scraps. Cut a piece of clear contact paper and put it sticky side up on your work surface. Use this sticky area to compose your cake, adding layers of your scraps. Don't worry about the shape of the cake at this point. Just lay the scraps out on the surface, overlapping for interest. The contact paper will be the back of the cake so if you are using scraps that have a right side, place them right side up.

Next, click the template below and print it out. Resize it first if you wish. Just position the template over your layers and cut through both the template sheet and the layer-covered contact sheet. If you've left room at the top of the contact sheet, you can use the stickiness to adhere the template for easy cutting.

If there are sheer areas, like lace sections, you can use the template again to cut the cake shape out of patterned paper. Then glue the contact-paper-backed cake to the patterned paper cake.

Sew a button, pom-pom, or flower to the top.

Print out the cakestand image (resize first if you resized the cake). Cut it out, glue to your journal page and then glue the cake assembly in place on top.

Use a loop of leftover ribbon scrap to make a tab...just staple it in place.

This cake will also make a fabulous gift tag or birthday card, don't you think?

  1. So I just discovered this online magazine with all the splendid projects! I absolutely LOVE it! I have decided to start my own creativity journal and have made my first two projects... the cake and the flower girl from the next issue! You can see my journal at my blog: http://thevintagedresser.blogspot.com/2008/10/my-creativity-journal.html

Thanks so much for a wonderful website!
