Miniature Suitcase

I originally made this project for a Club Little House swap. The suitcase is made from the box tops of two identical jewelry boxes. Look for colored boxes in the gift wrapping section of Michael's.

Using decorative twill tape, tape just the bottom together to form the hinge.

Likewise, tape the inside of the "hinge".

Using an awl or a nail, make 4 holes near the corners of the bottom of the suitcase. Insert tiny brass or other metallic brads through the holes, opening them to secure. These will be the feet of your suitcase.

Use decorative twill tape around the front and back edges. I like this polka dot tape because the dots resemble stitches when you're done.

Center the tape along the edge and adhere just the bottom along the edge.

Use your finger to gently fold the tape over and adhere to the top of the suitcase. Mitre the corners by pinching the seem together and then snipping as closely as you can with the scissors.

Trim both the top and the bottom in this fashion.

Trim the middle section too, both top and bottom, as shown.

Using an awl as you did before, make holes through the tape at the top of the suitcase, one on each side of the suitcase. Insert brads. Use a small bit of embroidery floss to wind around both brads for the closure.

Use a bit of the decorative twill tape to make a handle.

Finish the suitcase with miniature luggage labels. Click here for a file of the ones used in this project.

Now your tiniest doll can travel in style!

  1. This is adorable. Wouldn't something like this be great for place cards - attach an oversized luggage tag with the name, for a bon voyage party?

My mind is reeling with ideas.

  2. All kids love things that open. Even big kids! They would make great place cards as Lorrie suggested.
